John Brown
May, 9, 1800- Dec 2, 1859
I read the website and the book of Civil War, from the Smithsonian where I borrowed the library today and realized that was started as "anti-slavery" that man is white. Thought so that was Fredrick Douglass who were slavery breaker to worked on the anti-slavery society with Garrison in 1840s.
But actually, John Brown did more activity with his gang to take act to break up with the pro-slavery in Virginia. Since he broke the law from Southern area in Virginia and want him to go back to the court but decision: hanged.
He born in Torrington, Conn. He was fourth child of the eight children. Once he was part of his ancestry back to the 17th century (1600s) English Puritan. His father, Owen Brown was also the founder of the abolitionist Oberlin Church (Free Church).
John Brown was commanded forces at Battle of Black Jack and the Battle of Osawatome. In history: Pottawatomie Massacre.
Pro-slavery is the people who supporting slavery. Anti-slavery is the people who against the slavery.
John Brown were in Kansas that aware that Kansas is the free state that people has been mess up with what propose about to settlement for new law for which will be pro-slavery or anti-slavery. So almost about vote for pro-slavery were proposed for Kansas but John Brown keep interrupted in the place.
That is why he and his group to fought to free slavery that named the famous name of Eastern Kansas Pottawatomie Massacre. Where he and his group killed 5 pro-slavery settlers in May 1856.
John Brown in Kansas: Free State
He fled and captured in Harper Ferry in Virginia (now West Virginia) raid in 1859.
John Brown was 59 years old Brown's action prior to the Civil War as an abolitionist and tactics he chose, still make him a controversial figure today. He is sometime memorialized as a heroic martyr and a visionary and sometime vilified as a madman and terrorist.
He was "America's first domestic terrorist" Many historians believe that term "terrorist is an inappropriate label to describe Brown".
About 20 people hanged there.
Who followed him- some hanged, some killed, and freed, about 27 people. (five freed)
Last, John Brown was hanged at Harper Ferry in December 2, 1859. Before he hanged, he kissed an Africa American baby for good-bye before he die.
He buried in North Elba, NY (Northern of New York.)

Harper Ferry has lots of respected historical place. Even you will see this place and feel like you are in Civil War Era. There are some good restaurants on the hilltop, and near the river, a railroad.
